Lead singer Lilly Marie Scott was all smiles as she collected the grand prize for her band, Varlet, at the 2007 Battle of the Bands.

"It's awesome," Scott, 18, said. "I can't even comprehend the prizes."

Scott, with a voice reminiscent of Alanis Morissette, played an acoustic solo, "Tire Swings," as an encore for the small crowd gathered at Glenn Miller Ballroom.

"She has a really nice style," Aaron Ferencik, 18, a student at Pomona High School who attended the show, said. "I just wanted to jump around."

The grand prize consisted of a free full album recording at Crank That studios, a live show at the Hard Rock Cafe on Halloween night, and a second show at Club 156.

Twelve bands rocked the stage, and all proved themselves as good performers as the audience nodded their heads and screamed for each band that performed.

The Light on Adam's Stereo took second place. The band won a two-day recording session at Crank That Studios worth $500 as well as a $100 gift certificate to the Hard Rock Cafe.

Third place went to local band Mach Heroes. Their prize included a one-day recording session worth $100 at Crank That Studios, a chance to perform at "Party on the Patio" at the CU Rec Center, and clothes from the Hard Rock Cafe.

The scores were quite close from all the judges, but after much deliberation they awarded Varlet with the crown as the best band.

"I think that band (Varlet) really deserved it," Contest judge Daniel Sax, 20, a junior English major said. "Their performance was pretty strong. All the bands killed it."
