Some jokes are dirty, some jokes are clean, and some jokes just aren't funny.
Still, most can agree that a little laughter is important.
Every Wednesday night, Cafe Babu is filled with laughter as Dan Enfield, a senior political science major hosts a new open-mic night comedy show.
Ullas Morales, Babu's manager, thinks the comedy show brings a lot to the atmosphere of the college town.
"I love it -- I think it's so valuable for the Hill," Morales said. "There's nothing else like it here. It creates a friendly, wonderful, and positive energy."
Enfield's idea to create the show came as a way to demonstrate his own uniqueness.
"You have to be an egomaniac to be a comedian," Enfield said. "You have to believe that when you get on stage, no matter what your jokes are, you have the power to make the people laugh. I have always been an attention monger, so being a comedian was the next extension of that."
Enfield put a lot of time and effort into developing the show. He started from scratch and found a venue, promoted it aggressively, and helped build the stage.
"I went around to every bar in Boulder and begged and pleaded but nobody wanted to have a comedy show, Café Babu just opened and they agreed to my idea," Enfield said.
Peter Cohen, a comedian from the Denver area who performed at last week's show, liked the different angles the audience viewed him from.
"The place was packed with people and they were above me, in front of me and there were even people behind me," Cohen said. "It was interesting as opposed to just having people in front of me."
The open-mic show can even bring some surprises with who participates. Nate Dern, a contestant on the CW show Beauty and the Geek, was in town last week and graced the Babu stage with his comedic talent.
"It's an open-mic so anybody can get on stage," Enfield said. "Anyone can show up and anyone can have a good time."
Enfield assures that there will always be somebody to crack a joke on stage.
"It's a great environment, a really nice venue, with a lot of good comedians," Enfield said. "It's something different, and that's what CU needs."
